Why We Do Initial Assessments
In order to give your child the best experience, we need to know the areas they are competent in, and where they need more help. Once we have the data, we can start your child on lessons that will give them a base with their 123 Tuition maths tutor Christchurch. Whether your child is just beginning their mathematics journey, or they are struggling with a particular topic and this could be helped by going back and revising previous work, an assessment will help us to determine exactly where they need to start. Then our 123 Tuition team member will help provide your child with all the tools they need to thrive now and with their future maths work.
123’s Dynamic Study Plans
After the initial assessment gives us a strong indication of where your child needs help, we analyse the data in order to create a comprehensive Study Plan which is also aligned with the curriculum. The resulting Study Plan is able to be viewed by both parents and students and shows the list of lessons that have been identified as requiring further work for understanding, as well as the areas that do not require study. Once your child is ready to go, they activate our 123 Tuition Study Plan, then they can work through the lessons at the pace that works best for them. The Study Plan also allows them to revise any lessons just by selecting them. As our programmes are completely online, students can do it whenever they want, with help also available. You would be hard-pressed to find a local maths tutor Christchurch students love, who could do all that.
Our Maths Tutoring Will Make A World Of Difference
Whilst you have some other options out there when you are looking for tutoring, none of them are as simple, straightforward and as effective as 123 Tuition. Our system has been designed from scratch by fully qualified educators, which is another reason why so many schools recommend us to parents looking for extra help and support for their children, from a specialist maths tutor – Christchurch.
Initial Assessment
One size does NOT fit all.
It’s important your child starts confidently, because confidence breeds success. Now every child’s needs and abilities are different, so establishing a clear base level of understanding, so that they get immediate success and confidence is key. It is also important to ensure the ‘foundation blocks’ in their ‘brick wall of learning’ are cemented in place.
123 Tuition’s unique assessment process identifies the level that they can work at TODAY, with confidence and competence.
Our initial assessment will test your child on their current year’s work. This will produce a report that will detail those areas of weakness and those areas where your child is strong and competent.
Depending on the result of this initial assessment, it may be that we recommend your child attempts a further assessment but at a previous year’s level. Don’t be concerned about this. What’s most important is that we find their current level of competence.
Re-building their brick wall of learning will not only be a straightforward process, but a richly rewarding one for your child, as concepts not previously understood suddenly become areas of expertise for them.
IMPORTANT: All 123 Tuition courses have been aligned to the New Zealand Curriculum, so there will be no conflicting teaching methods, or material that is not required to be learned.
Study Plan
Having completed the Initial assessment, your child will have identified, through their own performance, those areas of strength and weakness within mathematics and within the year group being assessed.
The next step is to now create a personalised course of study, or Study Plan, for your child.
123 Tuition unique dynamic diagnostic assessment tool, will automatically analyse all of the questions attempted by your child – even if they left some answers blank, because this is still an answer – correlate the results and map them to the lessons relevant to this year group.
The resulting Study Plan can be viewed by both parents and students, and details those areas of competence that do not require any further revision or study, plus it will detail the list of lessons that have been identified as requiring further work for understanding.
Once activated, the Study Plan will automatically guide the student from lesson to lesson in the correct sequence. This is designed to take the frustration out of learning for the student, but also to remove the weight of responsibility from you, the parent, in worrying whether you’ve selected the right work for your child.
However, if a student is looking for pure revision of known topics, the Study Plan will not be used in this context. The student will be able to manually select those lessons that fit their immediate requirements.
Practice
When starting a new topic, or perhaps revising an old topic, the Practice provides the student and parent with the opportunity to ‘try out the lesson’ – to make sure that this is indeed the right lesson to be working on.
A large part of the 123 Tuition programme is focused on providing the student with a sense of empowerment over their teaching and learning. Feeling that you are in control is an important factor in building confidence, not something that all children feel in the classroom.
The Practice will expose the student to a range of questions and problems, that they are likely to encounter in the main lesson itself. It’s a great way to assess your child’s current level of knowledge on the selected lesson.
During the Practice, students can choose to have every single question read out to them, which can ease the burden on some students, who struggle with reading and find it tiresome.
Additionally, because this is about assessing and providing confidence, all students will have the opportunity to have a second attempt at each question (in case a simple mistake is made).
Students can also skip any questions they may already know.
The Practice also settles the student before attempting the main lesson and has them focused on the task at hand.
This 5 minute settling time is particularly useful after a long day at school, or after any long activity.
Lesson Tutorial
A picture paints a thousand words…
Our Teacher Tutorials are the one-on-one teaching moment of the lesson.
These supporting videos developed by qualified and experienced teachers allow your child to watch and learn about the current topic they are attempting… just like they would in the classroom.
These are not designed to be entertaining – these teacher tutorials are provided purely to ensure that solid teaching is visually available to the student. The aim is to teach and deliver a meaningful, explanatory and effective lesson, just as they would see in any classroom.
Once again, empowering you and your child with control over their teaching and learning is so important. Your child has total control over the teacher tutorial, they can replay or skip to any section as many times as they deem necessary to understand the learning process for the current lesson.
If your child ever gets stuck on something in the lesson, or with anything at school or with homework, as a parent you may, or may not, be able to provide the clarification or answer they need – it may be they won’t even come and ask for your help, because at some point you may have said “maths isn’t my strong point”.
With 123 Tuition they can easily ‘unstick’ themselves by watching the teacher tutorials, and continue with their progress.
It is the access to these teacher tutorials that makes students all over the world refer to 123 Tuition as “my secret weapon”, because they can have anything learned at school reinforced and re-explained at home at the push of a button.
Work Sheets
Perfect practice makes perfect.
Now it’s time to practice what’s been learned from the teacher tutorial.
During this stage your child only gets 1 attempt at the questions being asked, very much like an examination situation held at school.
As in the Practice, the student can choose to have every question read out to them.
This step is the assessment step in the learning process, where your child is tested on what they have learnt during the lesson topic.
Depending on the work being undertaken and the students age, the mode of entry of the student’s answers will vary from simple multiple choice, to integrated rulers, protractors, number pads, etc.
Even during this stage, putting the student in control is important. So the student can Save and Exit at any time during a worksheet, giving them a well-earned break, or just pausing for dinner. Being able to make 123 Tuition fit around your lives is critical, not the other way round.
The reports module will give you a wealth of information about their performance and progress – not least of which it will tell you how much your student is using the system!
All results from completed or attempted Examination lessons are recorded and presented within the Reports feature.
Results can be viewed in a variety of easy to read formats via – Summary, Progressive, Study Plan, Baseline reporting, including bar and pie charts.
What the reports will show you clearly is how much they are improving, this is important for them to see to provide them with the reassurance that they are getting better, or their revision is working.
The reports provide instant feedback for those students revising for a particular exam, and by default also guides them to other areas of revision that may be necessary.
Reports and Reflection
It is vital that not only can the student see how they are progressing, but you can too.
Even if you don’t think you understand Mathematics, you can look at these easy to understand reports and be informed on exactly what your child knows and what they need further help with.
It will give you the opportunity to ask how they’re finding it, the reports will highlight those areas that they’ve done very well at, and those where they have struggled. Being able to motivate, sympathise and empathise with them is important, they may not want you actively involved in the teaching and learning process, but they do want to feel you’re interested.
Once the student has completed the Worksheet, the student will be shown a summary report of the lesson just completed.
This summary report will highlight not only the questions answered correctly, but also any that have been incorrectly answered. It is important that students get the opportunity to reflect on their answers and to see where they went wrong. With this in mind, students can click on any incorrect question to be returned to the question where they can see the correct answer, so they can learn from their mistakes.
This revision and reflection function is very important in the learning process.
All student actions and results are recorded by 123 Tuition and are available for easy viewing by both parents and students within the Reports feature.
All early levels of mathematics contain printable worksheets which are an addition to the interactive computer lesson. This helps consolidate the retention of lesson content, especially with younger students.
Printable worksheets also offer your child the continuing development of their written skills as well as formulating answers for exercises related to the selected topic.
Answer sheets are provided for parents.
